Neighbor Rick and I paused from moving snow-berms out of the neighbors’ driveways, for a gasping rest and a short chat.  Grateful the plows came through to take the forbidding mire off the street; Rick observed that somehow the timing was just wrong: street crews arrived right after we had cleaned out the elders’ driveways the first time yesterday, and just before the trash guys were scheduled to pick up the cans that were now buried in the berms. more

Beyond the “R” Word

People are beginning to use the “R” word--some even go so far as to say “recession” out loud. Still many are in denial, not willing to recognize the current symptoms of economic stagnation as only an early warning. Using the “R” word or even discussing a growing recession remains shortsighted.  To remain shortsighted allows us to avoid focusing on a collection of growing trends that are causing many of our economic problems.  Denial and too narrow a focus are the ways of the status quo. The status quo, sticking to our current values, views, and practices is going to get us into big trouble. more
